Points in Time celebrates Marana’s heritage through images and text that highlight particular moments in history. A spectacular series of wall-mounted perforated metal shadowboxes, this artwork is designed to wrap around three sides of the new Marana Community Center and Aquatic Facility. The artwork makes a strong impression at a glance and to carry the viewer’s eye around the building, complimenting the architecture. At night, the artwork and surrounding wall are illuminated by LED lights from within. Tiny perforations in the sides of the shadowboxes create complex overlapping patterns of light that give a dynamic appearance to this portion of the building.

Each point in time stands alone because it tells a complete story. People lived their entire lives within the stories told in each of the points. But from our modern historically-aware perspective, the points can be enjoyed sequentially. These moments include: ancient hunting along the Santa Cruz River, a Hohokam Community, the Juan Bautista De Anza Expedition in 1775, the arrival of US Postal Service in 1858, the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1880, farming in the early 1900’s, Marana gets a name in 1920, the Cotton Gin in 1928, agricultural advancements, the Air Training Base in 1942, cowboy activity in the 1950’s, incorporation in 1977, and the active lifestyle of today. Particularly iconic aspects of history are depicted through the additional images of petroglyph, the flag, cotton, mining, the Marana logo, a tractor, and a swimmer to tie in the use of the facilities.
